EPFL was invited to the 9th EMA Invest forum in Geneva to showcase the creation of the CURES Center in Cameroon.Through training, research and technology transfer, CURES plans to improve access to energy in hospitals throughout the country. The goal of the EMA Foundation is to give economic actors in developing countries better access to international capital, technology, markets and media. It hosts EMA Invest forum in Geneva as a hub for economic actors from South and North to meet. Cameroon was the Guest of Honor at this year’s forum. Day 1 convened a panel of experts in financing energy development, including Cameroon’s Minister of Energy and Water, Mr. Basile Atangana Kouna. The consensus was that energy will be a key challenge if Cameroon is to reach its ambitious goal: to become an emerging country during the next few years. The CURES Center, with EPFL as its partner, has a very important role to play in this context. EPFL’s Cooperation & Development Center (CODEV) is working with the other partners to establish CURES and coordinate its research projects, which are an integral part of the EssentialTech initiative.Other EPFL laboratories are also involved, for example the Distributed Electric Systems laboratory (DESL) and the Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory (EMC Lab).
The creation of this center was highly appreciated, as Cameroon faces many challenges in the energy industry. The sector must not only generate electricity but also (and above all) improve distribution and access to energy in much of the country, while ensuring network stability and energy management at the national level and also for all its consumers.
